Start with what happened and what was damaged
Tell the insurer when the incident occurred, what caused the damage as far as you know and which property was affected. Distinguish damage to the home or another structure from a tree lying elsewhere in the yard. Do not assume preventive removal and removal after a covered loss receive the same treatment.

Ask about the actual limits and deductible
Request the policy provisions relevant to the claim, including covered causes, debris-removal limits, exclusions and deductible. Ask whether different parts of the work are handled differently. An online example is not your policy limit, and a tree company’s estimate is not a coverage decision.

Document from a safe location
Photograph the overall scene and damage only where you can do so safely. Keep estimates, invoices, receipts and communication with the insurer. Do not approach a leaning tree, hanging branch, damaged structure or possible electrical hazard to obtain a better photograph.
Ask the insurer about reasonable emergency measures and documentation. Immediate danger requires an appropriate emergency response; do not treat waiting for a claims decision as a reason to stay near a hazard.

Get an itemized tree-work proposal
Ask the contractor to separate removal, access equipment, debris handling, stump work and any additional services. Identify which work is urgent and which can be scheduled later. This makes it easier to compare the proposal with the insurer’s instructions and ask about uncovered expenses.

Clarify payment before signing
Confirm whom you must pay, when payment is due and whether any proposed claim-related arrangement requires separate review. Do not assume an insurer will pay the contractor directly or that all charges will be approved. Questions about a denial, coverage or future premiums belong with the insurer or an appropriate insurance professional.
